The modernisation that swept through the wine regions in the 1990s brought a new generation of dynamic winemakers, significant investment, innovative techniques, international varieties and a radical move towards the fruit-driven wine styles favoured in international markets. Although Rioja and Tempranillo continue to dominate, high-quality white varieties such as Albariño and Verdejo are gaining ground, while Bobal, Monastrell and Garnacha are producing exciting, elegant and good value reds.
