| LE CHATAIGNIER DOMAINE DE LA CITADELLE COTES DU LUBERON ABV 14%
Domaine de la Citadelle is one of those producers who has, in recent years, experienced something of re-discovery of their faith in elegance and finesse and who have confined to history the over extracted wines of the past. The domaine was originally set up by Yves Rousset-Rouard a famous French film producer of classics such as Emmanuelle, Emmanuelle 2, Emmanuelle 3 etc., it is now run by his son Alex. The domaine sits at the foot of the beautiful hilltop village of Menerbes 35 kilometres to the east of Avignon in the idyllic Provençal region of the Luberon. The domaine covers 45 hectares and is made up of 65 different parcels of vineyard. The patchwork nature of the domaine's holdings means a variety of different soil types and microclimates. One of the key geographical features of the Luberon, and the one that sets it apart from the neighbouring appellations of the Vaucluse is that almost all the vineyards face North. This orientation means that the wines from this area are always fresher, with higher natural acidity and have a greater level of tannins whilst often being lower in alcohol.
These are outstanding, well priced wines that go brilliantly well at the table but that given their southerly origins also possess the generous, rounded fruit to make them very pleasant to drink on their own. On a final note the appellation, like that of the Ventoux, is now just known as Luberon having done away with the 'Côtes de' prefix. It was felt that this would give the region more gravitas and consumers would more readily compare it with the likes of Gigondas, Vacqueyras etc.
"The Luberon produces some great wines at very keen prices. Domaine de la Citadelle is one of the best in the region. This is full rich and hearty, with some delicious ripe fruit, and an unexpected finesse for a wine so big. Try it with grilled thick pork chops with plenty of garlic."
