| LA EMPERATRIZ RESERVA RIOJA ABV 13.5%
Finca La Emperatriz, is located in the heart of the La Rioja Alta close to the town of Haro and mid way between the "Sierras" (mountain ranges) which border the region La Sierra de Cantabria to the north and La Sierra de la Demanda to the south. This estate has been called "La Emperatriz" for over a century as it belonged to Maria Eugenia de Montijo who as wife of Napoleon III, was empress of France. Even in her days the estate was know for the excellent quality of its wines, winning prizes at shows in Paris in 1876 and in Haro in 1884. Today Bodegas La Emperatriz has built on that wine-making tradition with a technologically up to date winery making modern, high quality wines.
This is a wine which is ruby red in colour, with a fairly opaque colour and a notable density. It has an intense aroma, where the scents from the ageing are immediately noticeable: vanilla, raisins, toasted almonds, caramel. On further appraisal the fruits come to the fore, including dried peaches and blackberries. The palate is also intense, powerful and well-structured, but with a polished tannin. It is outstandingly well-balanced, with fruit, acidity and wood all present but not dominating. The finish is particularly long, with the notes of spice and toast lingering on.
